## 30: Variance and Moments of Inertia

November 9, 2016

Posted by on If one considers a probability distribution as analogous to a mass distribution along a line, and likewise considers the expectation (or mean) of the probability distribution to be the center of mass of the mass distribution, then the *variance* of the probability distribution can be seen as equivalent to the *moment of intertia* of the analogous mass distribution with respect to rotation about its center of mass.
